Units
Convert bytes, durations and number bases, with the binary-versus-decimal distinction made explicit.
KB/MB/GB are 1000-based, KiB/MiB/GiB are 1024-based. A bare K, M or G is read the shell’s way, as 1024.
Compounds like 1h30m5s stack up; mm:ss and hh:mm:ss work too. A bare number is taken as seconds.
1111 1111
Converted with BigInt, so 128-bit values stay exact. 0x, 0o and 0b prefixes are accepted when they match the source base.
A gigabyte is either 1,000,000,000 bytes or 1,073,741,824 depending on who is counting, and the gap is why a drive sold as 1TB shows up smaller. Disk quotas and transfer estimates inherit the same ambiguity.
Convert byte sizes in both conventions with the difference shown rather than assumed, durations between milliseconds and days, and integers between binary, octal, decimal and hex.
What people open it for
- Converting a byte count into readable units for a log or UI
- Turning a timeout in milliseconds into something human
- Reading a hex value as decimal and back
In the terminal
